LAKE CHARLES, LA. - The University of Texas at Arlington broke a second place tie with McNeese State in the Southland Conference standings by handing the Cowgirls their first league loss on their home court Saturday afternoon. After dropping game one 30-22, the Mavericks came back to take the next three, 35-33, 30-24, 30-22.
The Mavericks stayed close early in game one but McNeese used six kills apiece from Marquita Williams and Nicole James to come out ahead 30-22.
UTA held a 25-20 lead in game two before a 10-5 Cowgirl run tied the score at 30. The squads battled back-and-forth before the Mavericks claimed game two, 35-33 and tied the match at one game a piece.
The Cowgirls led by as many as six in the third game before the Mavs began to cut the deficit. UTA rallied to tie the game and take the lead with back-to-back kills from junior Caley Smith. The Mavs controlled the rest of the game and put the Cowgirls away, 30-24.
A block assist by Stephanie Miklis and Mindy Hubik put the Mavericks ahead 18-11 in game four. The Cowgirls attempted to climb back, but UTA pushed ahead behind four kills from senior Elizabeth Davis to win the game 30-22.
For the second consecutive night, five Mavericks finished with double figure digs as libero Ashley Smith led with 16. Caley Smith and setter Heather Dunn followed with 14, while Davis and Julie Felts contributed 12 and 10 respectively. Dunn handed out 46 assists in the match while also hitting .529 with nine kills.
Texas-Arlington returns to action Friday, October 31 at Southeastern Louisiana. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the University Center in Hammond.
