HAMMOND, La. - The University of Texas at Arlington pushed its win streak to five by defeating Southeastern Louisiana 3-1 (29-31, 30-19, 30-24, 30-22) in Southland Conference volleyball action Friday. The Mavericks improved to 13-10 overall and 11-4 in the league.
For the third consecutive match the Mavericks dropped a tight game one. After trailing by as many as five in the game, UTA rallied to tie the score at 29 on an Ashley Van Antwerp kill. Southeastern La. capitalized on a Maverick service error and used a Keri Hamblin kill to take game one, 31-29.
UTA bounced back in game two, cruising to a 30-19 win. Sophomore Ashley Van Antwerp came off the bench and contributed six kills to the Mavs attack.
The Mavericks held the Lady Lions to a .093 attack percentage in game three, compared to their own .281. UTA used seven kills from senior Melissa Robinett and five kills from Van Antwerp to defeat SLU 30-24 and take a two games to one lead in the match.
Game four was a battle throughout with the Mavericks trying to put the Lions away and Southeastern pushing to force the deciding fifth game. It was the Mavs who came out on top taking what turned out to be the final game, 30-22.
For the third consecutive match five Mavericks finished with double-digit digs. Freshman libero Ashley Smith led the way with a career high 32 digs. Senior Elizabeth Davis contributed 21 while junior Heather Dunn followed with 20, and senior Julie Felts and junior Caley Smith chipped in with 17 apiece. Dunn also put up 59 assists and nine kills in the match, missing a triple-double by one kill for the second consecutive match.
Robinett paced the Mavs attack with 19 kills while Caley Smith was next in line with 16. Van Antwerp came off the bench to put down a career high 14 kills with a team high .387 clip and Mindy Hubik closed out the Mavs double-figure offense with 11 kills.
