TUCSON, Ariz...The University of Arizona freshman Kim Glass put down 28 kills as the Wildcats handed The University of Texas at Arlington a three-game loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the McKale Center on Thursday evening in Tucson. Game scores in the match were 30-22, 30-26, 30-20.
Arizona rallied behind 10 kills from freshman Kim Glass in game one to defeat the Mavericks, 30-22. Texas-Arlington stayed within two points for most of the game until a 9-4 run put the game away for the Wildcats.
The Mavericks led through most of game two, with their biggest lead being three points. Arizona continued to battle and used a kill from senior Shannon Torregrosa to take a 25-24 lead. The Wildcats would never reliquish the lead pushing ahead to win the game 30-26 and take a two games to none advantage into the break.
Arizona used a 6-1 run to start game three and force the Mavericks to come from behind. UTA could come as close as two in the game, but couldn't overpower the Wildcats. It was Glass again in game three leading the Wildcats with 11 kills to defeat the Mavericks 30-20.
Sophomore Olaya Pazo was the lone Maverick to record double-digit kills as she put down 11 in the match, hitting a match high .588. Senior Amber Pack and sophomore Caley Smith chipped in with 10 each while junior Melissa Robinett contributed seven to the Mavericks cause. Sophomore setter Heather Dunn handed out 30 assists and a team high 12 digs in the match. Pack recorded 11 digs in the defensive effort for UTA.
Arizona used a 62-39 kill advantage to hand the Mavericks their only three-game loss of the year.
The Mavericks end their impressive season with a 26-7 overall mark.
