AIKEN, S.C. ...The University of Texas at Arlington's Tyrone Mordt fired a 68 in the final round of the 36-hole Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championships in Aiken, S.C., to lead the Mavericks to a fifth place finish in the 15-team event. College of Charleston won the event by five strokes.
Mordt was coming off a first-round 72 on Monday, and he moved up from a tie for eighth place into a three-way tie with Vanderbilt's Brandt Snedeker and South Carolina's Alex Hamilton for third place in the tournament. Aaron Black of host South Carolina-Aiken won the tournament with rounds of 68 and 70 for a 36-hole 138. Black was one stroke better than second place Bruce McDonald of College of Charleston.
UTA's Anthony Estorga also finished strong, shooting 70 Tuesday to finish with a two-round total of 143 and in a tie for 12th place. The Mavericks' Landon Allen finished 24th with a 72-74-146; Brandon Mullen was 52nd with a 76-75-151; and Jordan Krantz was 66th after firing a 74-80-154.
The Mavericks finished the tournament with a 578 team score, after shooting rounds of 291 and 287. UTA entered the tournament tied with USC-Aiken and Kansas for second place, and were three strokes behind leader College of Charleston entering the day. As it turned out, Charleston finished with a 569 to defeat USC-Aiken by five strokes. South Carolina shot 282 Tuesday, just one stroke behind Charleston's 281 for the best round of the day, to leapfrog Kansas and UTA and finish third with a 36-hole 575. Kansas finished at 577, one stroke better than the Mavericks.
