GOLF TEAM FINISHES 12TH AT BORDER OLYMPICS

LAREDO, Texas... The University of Texas at Arlington's golf team finished 12th at the Border Olympics Friday and Saturday, shooting rounds of 300, 290 and 290 for a 54-hole team score of 880. The Mavericks finished 21 strokes behind Texas A&M and Arkansas, who each shot 859. Texas A&M won the tournament in a four hole sudden death playoff against the Razorbacks.

UTA was led by senior Anthony Estorga, who shot 74-70-72-216 to tie for 15th place in the tournament. He was the only Maverick in the top 20. Tyrone Mordt finished tied for 22nd, and his second round 69 was the best round by a UTA golfer in the field. Overall, Mordt shot 73-69-75-217. Brandon Mullen shot 74-76-75-225 to tie for 65th and finish third among the Mavericks, while sophomore Jordan Krantz played much better as the tournament wore on, shooting rounds of 82, 75 and 70 for a 227 total. Krantz tied for 79th place. Landon Allen's 79-80-73-232 rounded out the Mavericks' individual scores, and Allen finished 89th of the 100 golfers in the field.

Arkansas' Andrew Dahl won the individual medal by shooting 65-71-69-205.

UTA finished just one stroke behind 11th place Lamar, which has established itself as the Southland Conference's top team so far in the 2002-03 season, according to the latest Golfstat team rankings.

Texas A&M and Arkansas each shot 859 during regulation before the Aggies were able to finally beat the Razorbacks on the fourth hole of a playoff. San Diego State and Baylor each shot 861 to tie for third place, while Kansas State rounded out the top five with an 869. The second five consisted of SMU (871), Brigham Young (874), Alabama-Birmingham (875), Colorado State (876) and Iowa State (877). After Lamar and UTA, Washington State finished 13th (884), Notre Dame finished 14th (885) and Rice and Texas-San Antonio tied for 15th (887). Rounding out the 20-team field were Texa Tech (17th, 888), Southwest Texas (18th, 890), Rhode Island (19th, 894) and Louisiana-Lafayette (20th, 910).

UTA returns to action April 14-16 at the Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.
