ARLINGTON, Texas...Nicholls State's Caley Carter slammed 21 kills as the Lady Colonels handed The University of Texas at Arlington its first conference loss Saturday evening at Texas Hall. Game scores in the match were 22-30, 26-30, 30-22, 27-30 as the Mavericks fell to 6-7 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Despite leading 18-15 in the Mavericks couldn't hold on, dropping game one for the second consecutive night. Nicholls used seven kills from standout Becca Beall to roll past the Mavericks, 30-22.
UTA led early in game two, only to find themselves trailing by as many as four late in the game. A Mindy Hubik service ace brought the Mavs within one at 23-24, before a kill by Melissa Robinett tied the game. The Mavericks couldn't hold on as the Lady Colonels pushed ahead and took game two, 30-26.
The Mavericks regrouped during the break and came out ahead in the third game, 30-22.
After trailing most of game four, the Mavericks battled back. With the Lady Colonels leading 25-21, UTA went on a 4-0 run to tie the game, but Nicholls fought back and took game four, 30-27.
Joining Robinett in double figure kills was Hubik with 11. Three Mavericks contributed double-digit digs in the defensive efforts, with senior Julie Felts leading the way with 15. Setter Heather Dunn chipped in with 14, while freshman Ashley Smith collected 12.
Texas-Arlington returns to action Tuesday evening when it travels to Southland Conference foe Louisiana-Monroe. First serve is set for 7p.m. at Brown Gymnasium.
