THIBODAUX, La. - Texas-Arlington's Melissa Marek tallied a career high 14 kills as the Mavericks dropped Nicholls State, 24-30, 30-24, 30-26, 30-15 Friday evening in Southland Conference volleyball action. With the win UTA improves to 14-3 overall and 6-2 in the league while the Colonels fall to 4-9 and 4-3.
Nicholls State hit .310 in game one en route to a 30-24 victory. Atina Porter and Brenda Ross led the Colonels with five kills apiece. The Mavericks hit just .231 in the game.
UTA pushed ahead 9-8 in game two behind back-to-back kills from Ashley Van Antwerp. The Mavericks never looked back, using four kills each from Van Antwerp and Torie Dacus.
Melissa Marek paced the Mavs with five kills and an .833 attack percentage as UTA took a two games to one lead with a 30-26 victory.
The Mavericks controlled game four, cruising to a 30-15 win.
Smith led the Mavericks with 17 kills while Marek (14), Dacus (12) and Van Antwerp (12) all added double figures. Morgan Rogers led the defensive efforts for the 11th time this season, recording 17 digs. Dacus followed with 16, Van Antwerp chipped in 15 and Caley Smith and Ashley Smith added 12 each. Heather Dunn dished out 47 assists.
Caley Smith needs just 10 kills to move into the No. 9 spot on UTA's career kills list. Fannie Burton holds the spot with 1,245 career kills.
Texas-Arlington returns to action Saturday as it travels to Hammond, La. for a 4 p.m. match at Southeastern Louisiana.
