HAMMOND, La. - Senior setter Heather Dunn recorded 35 assists and 12 digs for her 12th double-double of the year and Caley Smith led five Mavericks in double figure digs as Texas-Arlington swept Southeastern Louisiana, 30-28, 30-15, 30-27 in Southland Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the University Center.
With the win the Mavericks improve to 15-3 overall and a 7-2 mark in the league, while SLU falls to 7-9 overall and 2-6 in the SLC.
The Mavericks led by as many as five twice in the opening contest before the Lions battled back to tie the game at 22. The squads see-sawed from that point on until kills from Caley Smith and Melissa Marek closed out the game for the Mavs.
UTA capitalized on five SLU ball handling errors and a -.083 attack percentage en route to a 30-15 game two victory. Ashley Van Antwerp led the Mavericks with five kills in the game. UTA held the Lions to just six kills in the game.
Southeastern jumped on the Mavericks in game three, doubling the Mavericks score early at 14-7. UTA battled back using a 9-2 run to tie the game at 16 before a Smith kill put the Mavericks in front for the first time at 19-18.
Van Antwerp paced the Mavs at the net with 13 kills while Melissa Marek also chipped in 11. Joining Smith with double-digit digs was Torie Dacus (13), Van Antwerp (13), Dunn (12) and Dani Johnson (10).
Southland Conference action heats up next weekend as the Mavericks play host to co-league leader Texas State and a young, but talented Texas-San Antonio squad. UTA will face off with the Bobcats Friday evening at 7 p.m. while Saturday's match is slated for 4 p.m. Both matches will be played at Texas Hall and can be heard live by pointing your web browser to www.utamavs.com and clicking on the UTA Radio link.
