ARLINGTON, Texas - Senior Caley Smith tallied 20 kills and senior Heather Dunn recorded 54 assists and 10 kills as The University of Texas at Arlington earned a come-from-behind 3-2 (26-30, 30-19, 25-30, 30-23, 16-14) win over Nicholls State in Southland Conference volleyball action here Friday. With the win the Mavericks secure the No. 3 seed in next week's SLC tournament in Beaumont.
UTA imporves to 22-6 overall, 14-5 in the league. Nicholls State falls to 10-15 and 10-9.
After dropping a back and forth game one, the Mavericks rebounded to cruise past the Colonels in the second game, 30-19.
Despite .636 hitting from Smith in game three, Nicholls State used a collective .367 attack percentage to edge the Mavericks 30-25. NSU's Atina Porter recorded nine kills in the game.
The Mavericks jumped out to an 18-13 lead in the fourth game before the Colonels pulled within one at 21-20 with a solo block from Porter. UTA closed out the game with a 9-3 run to even the match at two games apiece.
UTA trailed 9-11 and 11-13 in the deciding game but inched back to tie the game on a Nicholls State hitting error. Ashley Van Antwerp gave UTA its first lead at 15-14 with a kill before the Colonels hit the ball long to give the Mavs the 16-14 advantage.
Dunn recorded her third triple-double of the season, recording 10 kills, 54 assists and 12 digs. Joining Dunn in double-digit digs was Van Antwerp (17), Torie Dacus (16) and Ashley Smith (12).
The Mavericks return to action Saturday when Southeastern Louisiana visits Texas Hall for the regular season finale. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. and seniors Heather Dunn and Caley Smith will be honored prior to the match.
