UTA used a balanced attack to post back-to-back sub-par rounds and stand in second place after the opening day of the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Classic here Monday.
The Mavericks' six-under-par 570 score over two rounds is five shots behind Mississippi (565). Mississippi State is in third with a 575. Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana-Monroe are tied for fourth at 581 while Houston stands alone in sixth at 583.
Sophomore Zack Reeves (Arlington, Texas), ranked 63rd in the nation in this week's rating by golfweek.com, tied his career-best round with a sparkling five-under-par 67 in the morning round to lead UTA to a five-under 283. Junior Ryan Zamorano (Dallas, Texas) and senior Tyrone Mordt (Johannesburg, South Africa) matched with 71s and senior Jeff Murray (Odessa, Texas) posted a 74.
In the afternoon, Zamorano and Murray endured gusty winds on the 7,105-yard, par-72 to shoot 70s while both Reeves and Mordt carded 74s.
"The wind got up and changed the way a couple of holes played," said UTA Golf Coach Jay Rees. "Although the score doesn't show it, I thought we were more consistent and eliminated the little mistakes to help us shoot two under par rounds. We are working on the right things, eliminating the mistakes."
Junior Bryan Baker, who finished tied for eighth with a three-round total of 218 a year ago, carded rounds of 77 and 73 for a 150.
Freshman Michael Mullin (Austin, Texas), playing in his first collegiate tournament, recovered from an opening round 87 with a 70 in the afternoon.
