UTA sophomore Zack Reeves (Arlington, Texas) tapped in a par putt on the 205-yard, par-3 16th hole to win a four hole playoff for his first collegiate victory at the 2005 Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Classic here Tuesday.
Reeves' final round 70 led UTA to the low round of the day and a second place finish behind Mississippi. The Rebels finished the tournament nine-under-par 855. UTA, the defending champion, finished at 859, six strokes head of Mississippi State (865). Louisiana-Lafayette and Rice tied for fourth (878), Louisiana-Monroe was sixth at 800 and Houston followed at 881.
The 859 ties for the fifth lowest round in school history and Reeves' opening round 67 ties for tenth all-time.
"(The weather conditions) made the course play tougher," said Reeves. "Greens were rolling quicker and the pin placement was more difficult. This is a golf course where you have to pick your spots to be aggressive. I had only one bogey today is it made for a slow, slow round."
Junior Ryan Zamorano (Dallas, Texas) had his best tournament as a Maverick with a 54-hole total of 213 (71-74-72).
Senior Tyrone Mordt (Johannesburg, South Africa) fired a final round even-par 72 for 217. Senior Jeff Murray (Odessa, Texas) carded a 75 for a tournament total of three-over-par 219. Bryan Baker (Whitehouse, Texas) finished at 227 (77-73-377). Freshman Michael Mullin (Austin, Texas) had a final round 86 for a 247.
UTA ends the fall schedule at the Herb Wimberly Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
