DENTON, Texas - Seniors Heather Isbell (Keller, Texas) and Jacob Cedertun (Eklsjo, Sweden) posted season-best times to lead the UTA cross country team to a duel meet win over North Texas at the Eagle Point Cross Country course here Saturday.
In the women's division, Isbell trailed winner Jill Brennan of UNT by 22 seconds with a time of 19:29 over the 5-kilometer course. Isbell nipped teammate Jodi Hulett's (Arlington, Texas) time of 19:30 at the tape. Senior Ivorita Taylor (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica)was fourth at 19:38 while newcomer Caroline Erlingson (Angelholm, Sweden) weather the warm conditions with a time of 20:13 for eighth place. Sophomore Caranda Mose (Pearland, Texas) placed ninth with 20:16 and Kan-Dace Council (Converse, Texas) 10th with a 20:59. As a team, UTA defeated the Eagles 23-34.
In the men's division, UTA placed four runners in the top six for a 47-67 win.
Cedertun, a senior, clocked a 26:52 in his first meet of the season after missing the UTA Open three weeks ago. Idilio Campos (Mission, Texas) was third at 27:10 over the 8,000-kilometers layout. Sophomore Jody Broccoli-Hickey (The Woodlands, Texas) was fourth at 27:19 while freshman Ivan Pinal (Fort Worth, Texas) finished sixth with a 27:48. Rounding out the UTA lineup was sophomore Chris Miller (Carrollton, Texas) (eighth/28:12) and freshman Robert Hughes (Copperas Cove, Texas) (ninth/28:25).
"I thought we made some progress over the last three weeks," said UTA coach John Sauerhage. "We will get a good test next week in Arkansas before conference."
UTA will compete at the prestigious Tyson/Chili Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. on Oct. 15. The Southland Conference Championships are Oct. 31 in Natchitoches, La. The meet was originally scheduled for Beaumont, Texas, but due to the damage done by Hurricane Rita, the league moved the location.
