LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Texas-Arlington men's golf team fired an afternoon score of five-under-par 283 to share the lead with Idaho after the opening day of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate Tournament here Monday.
Sophomore Zack Reeves (Arlington, Texas), named the Division I Player of the Week by Golf World for the week of Oct. 28, 2005, put together back-to-back rounds of 70 and stands in third place one stroke behind Utah's Chris Gresh and Idaho's Dylan Hill.
Senior Tyrone Mordt had the Mavs' only eagle of the tournament and scored 71-71=142 to tie for seventh after the opening day. Mordt leads the tournament in par-3 scoring at two-under-par.
Junior Ryan Zamorano grab two birdies early in the afternoon round and finished with a two-under 70 to go along with a morning round of 74. Jeff Murray rallied from a 75 in the morning to shoot 72. Junior Bryan Baker had rounds of 76 and 75 while junior Marc Campbell, playing as a medalist, scored a 75-70=145.
"It was cold and windy in the morning and I thought par or better would be a good score, and it was," said UTA Men's Golf Coach Jay Rees. "They changed the pin placements in between rounds and the wind picked up making it difficult to score in the afternoon. The big thing I told the boys after the round is we need to work on getting better. We need to control our emotions and have fun getting better."
NOTES: UTA won the Herb Wimberly in 1998... A victory would mark the fourth tournament win in the past two seasons for the Mavericks... UTA, who led the nation in greens in regulation prior to the tournament, led the field in pars with 114 and was second in par-3 scoring at five-over-par.
