LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Texas-Arlington men's golf team recorded a two-over-par 290 on the final day to capture second place at the 2005 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate Tournament here Tuesday.
Xavier, ranked 40th in the nation by golfstat.scom, had the round of the tournament with a 10-under-par 278 to win by 10 strokes over the Mavericks. Weber State (868), New Mexico State (872) and Arizona (876) rounded out the top five teams. Wyoming (876) was sixth with three teams - Miami (Ohio), Northern Colorado and the New Mexico JV - tied for seventh at 878.
"Hats off to Xavier, they played great golf on Tuesday," said UTA Men's Golf Coach Jay Rees. "I thought we played steady. We hit some nice shots but couldn't get any putts to fall on Tuesday."
The second-place finish is the second of the fall for UTA and the fourth top three finish of the season. UTA took second place at the Squire Creek Intercollegiate on Oct. 18 and tied for third at both the Baylor Invitational and NIKE/Northwest Collegiate Classic.
Sophomore Zack Reeves (Arlington, Texas), named the Division I Player of the Week by Golf World for the week of Oct. 28, 2005, finished in a tie for sixth with a 54-hole total of 213 after rounds of 70-70-73. Senior Tyrone Mordt carded his second top 10 finish of the season with a final round 72 to finish at 214.
Jeff Murray (Odessa, Texas) finished one-under-par 71 on the 7,074-yard course on Tuesday. He tied for 32rd with a 218 (75-72-71).
Junior Ryan Zamorano (Dallas, Texas) tied for 25th with a 54-hole total of 219 after a 75 of Tuesday. Bryan Baker had rounds of 76-75-74 to finish at 225.
