UTA senior pole vaulter Levi Armstrong was named the Southland Conference Male Track and Field Athlete of the Week after becoming the first Mav to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a provisional-qualifying and school-record vault of 17-01.75 to win the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. Feb. 12.
The vault surpassed the former school record of 17-0 held by Jocqua Mitchell and Keith Finney. The vault also was a career-best, beating his old mark of 17-01.5 set at the Tarleton State Relays on April 1, 2004.
Armstrong earned all-Southland Conference honors last outdoor season and qualified for the NCAA Regionals with the effort at Tarleton State. A year ago, Armstrong finished tied for seventh at the SlC Indoor Championships with a vault of 15-05. He is a member of the 2004 SLC Track and Field All-Academic Team.
UTA will compete at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday at the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Houston.
