The UTA distance medley relay team of Courtney Carter, Chelsea Huddleston, Ivorita Taylor and Lisa Haglund clocked a time of 12-minutes, 02.74 seconds to claim second place on the opening day of the 2005 Southland Conference Indoor Championships at the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Houston here Friday.
UTA sits in fifth place after opening day with 26 points, just four points behind third place Sam Houston State. Stephen F. Austin is trying to unseat three-time defending champion Texas State with a 25-point lead over the Bobcats after the first day, 65-40.
UTA's performance in the DMR capped off a day where the Mavs got points in a number of field events. Tara Burns amassed a personal-best 3,377 points to claim fourth in the pentathlon and capped off the day with a fourth-place finish in the long jump (18-10). Linda Rosema finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 50-06.
In the 5,000 meters, freshman Jodi Hulett took sixth place with an 18:13.11.
The Mavs qualified three in the 800-meter finals - Taylor, Carter and Carranda Mose. Meanwhile, senior Lisa Haglund ran the fourth fastest time in the mile run (5:11.30) to advance to Saturday's final. Sprinter Brittany Williams advanced to Saturday's finals in the 60 meters and 200 meters. Transfer Ellen Garrison also advanced to the 60-meter finals.
Competition resumes Saturday morning with the final three events of the men's heptathlon, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Field events get under way at 11:30 with running events starting at 1:30 p.m.
