NORMAN, Okla. - Junior transfer Kelley Jackson continued his dominance in the throws and senior sprinter Glenn Taylor (Alexandria, La.) and junior Davis Tagi (Nakura, Kenya) picked up victories to highlight competition at the J.D. Martin invitational here Feb. 5.
UTA finished third in the team standings with 118 points, just 12 points behind winner Barton County (Kan.) Community College. Host Oklahoma was third with 127 points.
Jackson, the Southland Conference Men's track Athlete of the Week Jan. 25, came close to being the first Mav to qualify for the NCAA Indoors with a throw of 18.03 meters (59-02.0) in the 35-pound weight throw. The NCAA provisional mark is 19.00 meters. He also took first place in the shot put with a season-best put of 55-09.75.
Taylor won the 200 meters with a 22.18. It was the third straight meet that Taylor tallied a top four finish. Sophomore Jared Connaughton (Charlottetown, Canada) had his fastest time of the season with a 22.4 for fourth place. He finished third in the 60 meters. His 6.94 preliminary time is the top by a Mav this season.
Tagi (1:58.91) and Demery Cox (1:59.34) posted a 1-12 finish in the 800 meters. Meanwhile, senior Jacob Cedertun (Eksjo, Sweden) ran a season-best 4:15.63 in the mile run for third place. Junior Daniel Noah (Hitchcock, Texas) finished fifth with a 4:27.39. in the 3,000 meters, Noah was second with an 8:55.40 and Cedertun third with an 8:59.34.
In the jumps, Quinchun Carey (Fort Worth, Texas) jumped a career-best 22-03 for third place in the long jump. Brian Allison (Danbury, Texas) was sixth with 21-03.50.
Carey's jump of 46-05.25 was the best by a Mav this season and good enough for fourth place in the triple jump.
Junior Adam Stafford (Merkel, Texas) finished third in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.15 and senior Levi Armstrong (Alvin, Texas) was third in the pole vault with a 16-00.75.
A select group will compete at the Tyson/Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. Saturday. The remainder of the team will compete at the Southland Conference Indoor Track Championships Feb. 18-19 in Houston, Texas.
