SLOW STARTS SEND MAVS TO 3-0 LOSS TO RUTGERS

Sept. 2, 2005

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland - The University of Texas at Arlington volleyball team struggled out of the gate in each game and could never overcome their slow starts in falling 26-30, 26-30, 16-30 to Rutgers on the first day of the Courtyard by Marriott Ft. Meade Invitational on the campus of the University of Maryland.

Ashley Van Antwerp led the offense with 12 kills and was joined in double figures by Morgan Rogers with 11. Rogers led the defense with 19 digs, followed by Ashley Smith with 16, Emily Nedderman 15 and Van Antwerp 13.

UTA (1-2) fell behind by as many as eight points in the first game before four kills by Van Antwerp triggered an 11-4 run to pull the Mavs to within one at 21-22. The Scarlet Knights responded with three kills from Kyra Thompson and a pair from Ashleigh Young to pull away and take the game 30-26.

The second game saw the Scarlet Knights take the lead early and maintain the lead until two kills from Rogers and a block by Rogers and Melissa Marek knotted the score 15-15. Amanda Meyer put an end to the Mavs run with three kills and a block to help RU pull ahead 22-16. UTA would score six of the next eight points before Lora Yankauskas put the game away with two kills.

RU (2-2) again jumped out to the early lead in game three and never looked back in putting away the Mavs 30-16 in the final game.

The Mavs return to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Marshall at 12 p.m. CST at the Comcast Pavilion.
