COLLEGE PARK, Maryland - Senior Ashley Van Antwerp had a season-high 20 kills and Morgan Rogers added 11 kills and 15 digs, but it was not enough as Maryland used their distinctive height advantage to hand Texas-Arlington a 30-28, 30-26, 30-27 loss at the Courtyard by Marriott Ft. Meade Invitational.
UTA (1-4) used the momentum from their final game of the afternoon match to stun the home team out of the gate. The Mavs pounded out 21 kills to only five errors in the first game. Van Antwerp led the offense with six kills and Morgan Rogers added five.
Melissa Marek helped the fast start with a pair of kills to give the Mavs an early four-point advantage. After the Terps tied the score 12-12, neither team was able to open up more than a two-point lead the remainder of the game and when Rachel Wagener put away the final kill UM took game one 30-28.
The second game was a mirror image of the first as UTA jumped out to a quick lead and neither team was able to open up more than a two-point advantage until late in the game. Van Antwerp's kill tied the score 26-26, but it was all Terps from their as three straight kills from Beth Gillming set up Jade Brown's game-ending kill.
UTA came out of the intermission and rode the right arm of Van Antwerp early as the Colleyville product put away three kills to give the Mavs a 7-3 advantage.
The early surge awoke the Terps (3-0) as the home team responded with eight of the next nine points to take a three-point advantage. The Mavs did not go quietly into the night as they battled back to take a three-point advantage on a Rogers kill. After the match was tied again, Emily Nedderman recorded three kills to put UTA ahead 20-19.
MU then went back to their size in the middle as the 6-4 Wagener recorded four kills and added two blocks to help the Terps win the final game 30-27.
Junior libero Ashley Smith led the defensive effort with 20 digs and Nedderman added five kills and 42 assists. Wagener led five Terps in double digit kills with 14.
The Mavs return to action on Sept. 7 against Oklahoma. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Norman, Okla.
