In the opening game, UTA (20-7, 9-2) overcame a slow start to take the lead for good on a Sobczak kill to make the score 14-13. From that point, the Mavs found their groove and quickly opened six-point advantage on another Sobczak kill. UTA would set up game point with a kill from Johnson and Gina Kalb would the game with a kill of her own.
SLU (4-22, 0-11) kept the second game close for the first part of the game. UTA finally grabbed control of the game on a pair of aces off the right arm of Emily Nedderman. The lead would grow to seven points before Johnson sealed the deal with a kill.
UTA made sure the match did not extend past three games as the Mavs raced out to a 21-9 advantage. The Lions would trim some points off the lead, but UTA freshman Liz Curry would come off the bench to bring the crowd to their feet with three thunderous kills.
Senior libero Ashley Smith recorded a match-high 19 digs in the match and became the third player in school history to eclipse the 1,700-dig plateau. She now has 1,717 digs in her career and needs only 12 kills to pass Jessica Bowlin for second place all time. Smith was joined in double digits in kills by Johnson with 18 and Sobczak with 10.
The Mavs return to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Nicholls State at 4 p.m. at Texas Hall.
