Box Score
ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the fifth and deciding game to complete their sweep of the East Division with a 26-30, 30-17, 30-22, 17-30, 15-12 victory over Nicholls State Saturday afternoon at Texas Hall. The victory improved the Mavs to 7-1 in five-set matches this season.
Torie Dacus sparked the comeback with a pair of kills and UTA got within one on a Colonel hitting error. Chelsea Dockery pushed the advantage back to two before the Mavs tied the game on a Dacus kill and Dockery service error.
UTA (21-7, 10-2 SLC) took the lead for good on three straight NICH hitting errors. The Colonels pulled within one point, but Teena Sobczak set up match point with a kill and Emily Nedderman ended things with her third service ace of the match.
NICH (8-19, 2-10 SLC) took advantage of the slow start from the Mavs an opened a huge game-one lead. After a 10-3 Maverick run tied the score, NICH scored the next three points to regain control and take the game.
The Mavs were back at it in the second game and quickly raced to a 23-9 advantage and eased to victory.
The third game was a little closer as UTA used a 12-2 run to break open the game. Sobczak led the offensive charge as she had six of her team-high 19 kills in the game.
The same cannot be said about game four as the Mavs hit just .024 and managed only eight kills to seven errors. Atina Porter led the charge with six of her 23 kills coming in that game.
Senior libero Ashley Smith continued to climb the UTA record books as she recorded 19 digs to move past Jessica Bowlin for second place all time. In her career, Smith now has 1,736 digs.
The Mavs return to action Nov. 1 as they host SLC leading Stephen F. Austin to Texas Hall. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
