ORLANDO, Fla. - Junior Michael Douthit endured cool temperatures and gusty winds to fire a one-over-par 73 to lead UTA to a fifth-place tie after the opening day of the UCF/Rio Pinar Intercollegiate Tournament Monday.
UTA finished the day 10-over-par 298 through the first round. Second round play was halted due to darkness. Earlier in the day a one-hour frost delay slowed play leaving golfers on the course.
Douthit carded the low round of the day for the Mavericks and is tied for seventh in the medalist standings. Only two golfers - Lamar's Casey Clendenon and Louisville's Derek Fathauer were able to break par with rounds of 71 and 70, respectively.
Sophomore Zack Reeves carded a 36 on the back nine and finished with a 74. Ryan Zamorano carded a nifty 35 on the front, but struggled with a 40 on the back for a 75. Senior Tyrone Mordt had 76 and senior Jeff Murray shot an 82.
Memphis leads the tournament with a 295. Lamar is second (296) followed by Mississippi (297) and Louisville (2297). Southern Mississippi is tied with UTA at 298. Furman is tied for seventh with Michigan at 304, South Alabama (306) and Mercer (308) round out the top 10.
UTA was left with four holes to play in their second round and will play an entire third round on Tuesday. - utamavs.com -
