The Texas-Arlington men's golf team fired a final round 296 to claim third place at the UCF/Rio Pinar Intercollegiate Tournament here Tuesday.
The 296 was the best round of the tournament for the Mavericks who tied for ninth a year on the Rio Pinar course. UTA's 893 was 16 strokes behind the tournament's winner -- SLC-foe Lamar (877). Southern Mississippi finished second with an 884.
Senior Tyrone Mordt had the only round under-par for the Mavs Tuesday with a two-under 70. His 54-hole total of 222 tied for 13th. Lamar's Casey Clendenon won medalist honors with a five-under-par 211.
Junior Michael Douthit recorded his first top 20 finish of the season, tying for 18th with a 223 after rounds of 73, 74 and 76. Sophomore Zack Reeves ballooned to a 79 on the final round and finish at 225. Senior Ryan Zamorano (75-77-75) tallied a 227 and senior Jeff Murray (82-79-75) finished with a 236.
"We were inconsistent with our ball striking," said UTA coach Jay Rees. "We need to go out and work harder. We missed too many fairways and greens."
UTA travels to the All-American Invitational Feb. 27-28 in Houston.
