UT Arlington posted a final round nine-over-par 297 to claim second place at the UALR/First Tee Invitational at the Chenal Country Club here Tuesday.
UTA's three-round total of 879 was two strokes behind Southland Conference foe Lamar who shot a final round 295 for a tournament total of 877 to post the win. The finish was the eighth top-five finish for the Mavericks this season.
Houston (882) finished three shots behind UTA followed by North Texas (883), Oral Roberts (900), Louisiana-Monroe (901), Middle Tennessee State (908), Missouri (911), Arkansas-Little Rock (914) and Sam Houston State (917).
Arkansas State (918) was 11th with Eastern Michigan (919), Louisiana Tech (920), Stephen F. Austin (922) and Arkansas-Little Rock "B" (965).
"We accomplished one of our goals and that was to beat Houston and eliminate them (in the quest for an NCAA regional tournament at-large berth)," said UTA Men's Golf Coach Jay Rees. "We have not played our best golf yet and we have yet to get five guys to play well at the same time. We havae a chance to do that at St. Mary's and the conference meet."
Sophomore Zack Reeves and senior Ryan Zamorano tied for sixth in the medalist standings with a 54-hole total of 217. Zamorano tied for the second lowest round of the day -- a one-under-par 71. Reeves, who was tied for the lead after the first round, had six birdies but a triple bogey on the par-5, 525-yard seventh hole led to a round of 74.
