LUBBOCK, Texas - UArlington sophomore Wade Hayes had competed in just one college track meet prior to last week's Arkansas Invitational. Eight days later, the Class 3A state champion from Bonham has found he can vault at the Division I level.
Hayes cleared 4.95 meters (16-02.75) to take second place in the pole vault at the Texas Tech Invitational here Friday.
UT Arlington competed without several of its standout athletes Friday. Senior Jared Connaughton (Charlottetown, B.C., Canada) did not compete in Friday's competition. His absence made way for several newcomers to take the spotlight.
Freshman Jarid Vaughan (Langley, B.C., Canada) ran the fastest 400 meter race in more than three indoor seasons with a second-place time of 49.39. Senior Coby Morrison (Wichita Falls, Texas) was third with a 49.88, Aron Morgan (Southlake, Texas) took fifth with a 49.96 and Curtis Hoyle (Cameron, Texas) claimed sixth with a 51.89.
Senior Jon McDowell (Odessa, Texas) was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.10 seconds.
In other action, sophomore Ivan Pinal (Fort Worth, Texas) was fifth in the 5,000-meters with a time of 15:55.53.
Senior Quinchun Carey (Fort Worth, Texas) took third in the long jump with a leap of 7.05 meters (23-01.75).
Saturday's events begin with the triple jump at 10:30 a.m. The running events are slated to begin at 12:30 p.m.
