LUBBOCK, Texas - UT Arlington senior Linda Rosema (Azle, Texas) recorded her second best mark of her career with a toss of 16.25 (53-03.75) meters in the weight throw to record her first indoor competition at the Texas Tech Invitational here Friday.

Rosema, who threw 37-07.25 for fifth place at this same meet in 2005, beat North Texas' Shauna Shepard who threw 16.02m (52-06.75) for second place. UTA freshman Emma Stahlberg had a throw of 12.87m (42-02.75) in her second collegiate meet.

A number of newcomers to the UT Arlington women's track team fared well on the opening day of the two-day event at the Athletic Training Center on the Texas Tech campus.

Lubbock native Antonia Hopkins made an impressive return to the South Plains with a third-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 58.18 seconds. It is the fastest 400-meter time by a Maverick in more than three seasons. The freshman from Lubbock Estacado High School led a group of four Mavs in the top eight as freshman Chamberlain Garber (San Marcos, Texas) took fourth place with a 58.31, freshman Jasmine Walls (Pearland, Texas) was sixth (1:00.36) while junior Bryana Hill placed seventh with a 1:00.41.

Walls will compete in Saturday's 55-meter finals after the sixth fastest qualifying time of 7.28. Teammate Kourtnee Jones (Abilene, Texas) was fourth with a 7.26 and Shana Rash (Midlothian, Texas) finished seventh with a 7.31.

Jones, a three-time all-Southland Conference runner and an NCAA Midwest Region finalist last season, ran a personal-best time of 25.15. for second place in the 200 meters.

Kimberly Hargers (Crowley, Texas) shaved more than a second off her personal best with a 25.50 for fourth place in the 200 meters while Crystal Thompson (Abilene, Texas) also set a personal best with a 25.72 for seventh place.

Junior Angela Gonzales (Merkel, Texas) jumped 5.53m (18-01.75) for second place in the long jump. Latasha Watson (Rowlett, Texas) was fourth with 5.43m (17-06.25).

Three Mavs finished in the top eight in the pole vault. Senior Vanessa Maida (Abilene, Texas) took fifth with a vault of 3.55m (11-07.75). Lacey Moore (Great Bend, Kan.) was seventh with 3.40m (11-01.75) and sophomore Erin Cluiss (Forney, Texas) was eighth with 3.40m (11-01.75).

The Invitational continues Saturday with the field events beginning at 10 a.m. The 60-meter hurdles begin the running events at 12:30 p.m.
