The UT Arlington men's and women's cross country teams got their final work in before the upcoming Southland Conference Cross Country Championships as they competed at the 19th Annual Chili Pepper Cross Country Festival here Saturday.
The UT Arlington men finished 12th with 381 points, while the women took 25th place in the 41-team field.
For the men, senior Jody Broccoli-Hickey was once again the top Maverick runner, finishing 34th with a time of 31-minutes, 29.5-seconds over the 8,000-meter course. Sophomore Idilio Campos was 40th with a 31:45.9 and junior Ozie Hood was 88th with a 32:46.8.
"I thought Jody (Broccoli Hickey) and Idilio (Campos) ran well, but the rest struggled to be competitive," said UT Arlington Head Cross Country Coach John Sauerhage. "We got out of the meet healthy and we will continue to work hard over the next two weeks to try and grab a top-three finish at the conference meet."
Sophomore Ivan Pinal (102nd/33:15.9), freshman Zach Zura (117th/33:30.9) and freshman Jose Balleza (119th/33:32.3) completed the top six Mav runners.
The rest of the team saw freshman Heinz Schwartzkopf finished 168th with a 35:25.9 and senior Jeff Raines clocked a time of 38:05.6.
Arkansas won the team title with 47 points and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi senior Shadrock Sangkog won the individual title with a time of 29:22.1.
The women's team scored 681 points on Saturday. Texas Tech upset fourth-ranked Arkansas for the women's team title with 83 points to the Ladybacks' 87. Virginia tech (130), Cal Irvine (195), Oklahoma State (200), Texas (224), Texas A&M (233), Richmond (302), Utah (317) and James Madison (337) round out the top 10. Texas Tech's Sally Kipyego won the race with a time of 19:49.2.
"Our women have to get better over the next two weeks and the motivation is there to do so," said Sauerhage. "We could have Caroline (Erlingson) and Ida (Landgraff) back for the conference meet so that should help us."
Freshman Annabelle Everitt was the top Mav runner with a 94th place finish with a time of 23:07.6 over the 6,000-meter course that will serve as the site of the NCAA South Central Regional in November.
Senior Carranda Mose (116th/23:27.8), senior transfer Magan Moore (13th/23:51.6), freshman Perri Ford (156th/24:26.0), freshman Amanda McMahon (180th/24:54.5), sophomore Christina Mose (216th/25:58.7) and freshman Esther Abuto (223rd/26:18.6) completed the race for the Mavs.
Sophomore Caroline Erlingson missed her second straight meet after running the first two events of the year and Ida Landgraff is slated to run her first meet of the season at the conference meet, according to Sauerhage. Landgraff posted four top-25 finishes last season and placed 14th at the SLC meet with a 23;35 over 6K.
