HAMMOND, La. - UT Arlington won in straight games (30-23, 30-22, 30-20) in a Southland Conference volleyball match at Southeastern Louisiana on Friday night. The Mavericks improve to 17-9 overall and 10-3 in the league while the Lady Lions fall to 10-15 and 1-12.
The Mavericks and Lady Lions traded leads early in game one until UTA went on a 10-2 run to lead 23-15 and force SLU to burn their second timeout. The Mavs held on to win, 30-23 despite a 9-7 run by the Lions to close the game.
UTA opened the second game with 5-3 run before SLU scored three straight points to take a one-point lead. From there, the Mavs went on a 13-4 run for the eight-point advantage (18-10). Behind a solo block from Emily Nedderman and kills from Liz Curry and Gina Kalb, UTA led 23-16. Freshman Katie Utecht came in to serve, setting up game point with an ace and the Mavs went on to win 30-22.
With kill from Torie Dacus, a block assist from Murray and Bianca Sauls and an ace from senior Dani Johnson the Mavs took the early 6-2 lead in game three. UTA went on to win 30-20 after Johnson set up match point with her second ace of the game.
The Mavs will continue their Louisiana road swing on Saturday in Thibodaux with a 2 p.m. showdown at Nicholls State.
