MAVS LEAD AFTER OPENING DAY

March 5, 2007

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Freshman Bryce Easton fired a 3-under-par 69 in the morning round and followed with a two-under-par 70 in the afternoon to share for the lead at the Callaway Golf Invitational at The Farms Golf Course in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Monday.

The Mavericks lead the 15-team tournament by one stroke over San Diego State and two better than tournament host San Diego. The Mavs carved out a five-over-par 581 after 36 hole.

San Diego State (582), San Diego (585), Cal Poly (586), Nevada (588) and Arkansas (592) after the top six teams followed by Denver (593), St. Mary's of Calif. (595), Santa Clara (595), UC Davis (596), Colorado State (601), UC Santa Barbara (604), UC Irvine (606), Long Beach State (610) and San Jose State (634).

Easton is tied with former Lamar standout and current Arkansas golfer Andrew Landry at 139.

"Bryce played mistake-free golf today," said UT Arlington Head Men's Golf Coach Jay Rees. "Michael van de Venter played good golf... it's good to see our freshmen starting to come around and play like they are capable.

"Zack (Reeves) had a tough afternoon. He played with a guy who shot a 104 and had trouble keeping his focus. H'll play better tomorrow."

Freshman Michael van de Venter is tied for ninth at 143 after rounds of 71 and 72. Junior Zack Reeves stumbled to a round of 81 in the afternoon and is at 151. Senior Bryan Baker rebounded after an 81 in the morning to card a 73 in the afternoon.

Freshman Bobby Massa had back-to-back rounds of 78 and is tied for 60th with a 156.

The final round is Tuesday at the par-72, 6,911-yard The Farms Golf Course in nearby Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
