The UT Arlington men's golfer Bryce Easton recorded his first collegiate top-10 finish with the lowest tournament score by a Maverick this season to highlight play on the final day of the Callaway Golf Invitational Tuesday.
The Mavs stumbled to a 302 and a seventh-place finish on the final day as San Diego State leapfrogged past host San Diego and UTA to win the tournament by seven strokes with a 54-hole total of 867.
The Mavericks' 14-over-par 302 was the high round of the day on the par-72, 6,911-yard course at The Farms Golf Club in nearby Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
San Diego finished second with an 874 followed by Cal Poly (875), UC Davis (878), Nevada (880), Arkansas (881), St. Mary's of Calif. and UTA (883), Colorado State 884 and Denver (886) to round out the top 10. Santa Clara (889), UC Santa Barbara (896), UC Irvine (898), Long Beach State (910) and San Jose State (930) completed the 15-team field.
Easton finished the tournament with rounds of 69-70-74=213 to tie for fifth place. Louis Bishop of UC Davis was the medalist winner with a three-round total of 209.
Freshman Michael van de Venter tied for 21st with a 71-72-77=220. Freshman Bobby Massa carded his low round of the tournament, a two-over-par 74 on Tuesday to finish at 230. Senior Bryan Baker had a 77 Tuesday to finish 231 and Zack Reeves posted a season-high 82 and finished at 233.
UT Arlington returns to action, March 19-20, at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas. The Southland Conference Championship is April 16-18 in Kerrville, Texas.
