The UT Arlington men's golf team could not take advantage of favorable weather conditions, shooting a 14-over-par 302 to slip to sixth place after the second day of the 2007 Southland Conference Men's Golf Championship here Tuesday.
The Mavericks will join Nicholls State, Central Arkansas and McNeese State with the early tee time on Wednesday.
Rains overnight and a blanket of low clouds and drizzle in the morning gave way to sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s during the second round. The lack of wind and the rain softened greens and made the 7,103-yard Comanche Trace Golf Club layout vulnerable to low scores.
Lamar shot a 20-over-par 268 to build a whopping 24 stroke lead over second place Southeastern Louisiana (576). Texas-San Antonio shot a three-over-par 291 on Tuesday and sits in third with a 54-hole total of 581. Texas State (309-287-596) and Sam Houston State (309-289-598) round out the top five.
The rest of the field includes: UTA (305-302-607), Stephen F. Austin (315-303-618), McNeese State (321-303-624), Central Arkansas (323-302-625) and Nicholls State (329-311-640).
Lamar's Dawie Van Der Walt scorched the front nine in 31 and finished with a seven-under-par 65. He started the day with three straight birdies, an eagle on the par-5, 523-yard fifth hole and another birdie on the par-4, sixth hole to got to seven-under-par through six holes. His chances at clipping the course record of 62 slipped away after a double-bogey on the par-4, 448-yard No. 9. His only other error of the day came with a three-putt from 25 feet on the par-5, No. 13 for par.
Teammates Olive Bekker (71-67-138) and Casey Clendenon (70-69-139) are second and third, respectively.
UT Arlington was led by senior Bryan Baker and freshman Michael van de Venter with rounds of 74. van de Venter struggled on the par-3, No. 3 with a four putt from six feet away to squander a birdie opportunity and settled for a double bogey.
Freshmen Bobby Massa and Bryce Easton carded 77s and Zack Reeves settled for an 80.
TOURNAMENT TIDBITS: The Mavs shot the par 5's one-under-par on Tuesday... Zack Reeves round of 80 on Tuesday was his highest score in a conference championship... van de Venter (tied for 13th) is the only Mavs in the top 20 after 36 holes.
