MAVS SWEEP MARQUETTE TO CLAIM TOURNAMENT TITLE

Sept. 1, 2007

Box Score

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The UT Arlington volleyball team completed a perfect weekend as they dominated from start to finish in sweeping Marquette (30-20, 31-29, 30-23) to claim the championship at the Marquette Kickoff Tournament.

Teena Sobczak was the driving force behind the Mavericks offense as she recorded a match-high 20 kills and hit .375. She was joined in double figures in kills by Torie Dacus and Ellen Murray with 10 apiece. Sobczak and Dani Johnson had a team-best 12 digs, while Bianca Sauls and Dacus added 11.

"I was really worried about Teena over the course of the first few matches, but she came back today and had two very good matches and we need that out of her," said head coach Diane Seymour. "We expect a lot out of her now that she is a sophomore. She needs to be a big part of our offense."

UTA (4-1) came out in the opening game and used a 12-3 run early to take a commanding 18-9 advantage. The Mavs did not let up from that point as Sobczak delivered seven kills and Ellen Murray added three of the team's eight block assists in the opening game as the Mavs eased to the 30-20 victory.

The second game started much the same as the first except for the big run by the Mavericks. The two teams stayed within two points of each other until a Sobczak kill and a pair of Golden Eagles' hitting errors gave UTA the 27-23 advantage. MU crawled back and knotted the score at 29-29 on a Jenn Brown kill. Game point would be set up by a Dacus kill and Murray would end things as she put away an over pass for the 31-29 victory.

The Golden Eagles (2-3) came out in the third game and took a two-point advantage very early, but were not able to sustain the lead as a MU service error and a kill from Sauls gave the Mavs a 9-7 lead that they would never relinquish. The total all-around effort was solidified by a pair of late kills and a block from Gina Kalb.

The Mavs return to the court on Sept. 5 as they travel to take on TCU. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
