The UT Arlington men's and women's cross country teams used their depth to capture the team titles at the Movin' Mavs Cross Country Challenge at Vandergriff Park here Saturday morning.
The women's team scored 35 points in the four-team race to outlast SMU (44), North Texas (72) and Central Arkansas (75).
"I thought we had a great meet, we did well on a hot and humid morning," said UT Arlington Cross Country Coach John Sauerhage. "We showed our depth and we will try to build off this win. We've got a lot of work to do, but I like this team and their effort."
Caroline Erlingson led a group of five Maverick runners to finish in the top 11. Her time of 12:01 was good enough for fourth place.
Freshman Annabelle Everitt was fifth (12:03), followed by senior transfer Magan Moore (12:17) and senior Carranda Mose was ninth with a 12:21. Freshman Perri Ford clocked a 12:29 to take 11th.
SMU's Samantha Means won the individual competition with an 11:30.
In the men's division, UT Arlington had six individuals in the top 10.
Idilio Campos took second place in the four-mile race with a 20:54. Senior Jody Broccoli-Hickey was third with a 20:56. Ozie Hood finished fifth in the race with a 21:25 followed by Armando Saldivar (21:29). Freshman Jose Balleza took eighth with a 21:46 and Ivan Pinal finished 10th at 21:58. Freshman Zack Zura was 12th with a 22:09.
"This is a fantastic start to the season," said Hickey. "I was happy to see how well our younger runners performed and Idilio has come in this season in fantastic shape."
The high school division winner were: Mansfield High in Division I girls, Southlake Carroll in the Division I boys, Holliday won the Division II girls team title and Fort Worth Trinity Valley took the Division II boys crown.
Tara Upshaw of Southlake Carroll won the Division I girls race with a two-mile time of 12:09. Colby Lowe of Southlake Carroll dominated the boys division I race with a time of 14:49 ove three miles to defeat the field by 46 seconds. Julia Holub of Seymour won the Division II girls race with a 12:58 and Jenner Kizer of Fort Worth Trinity Valley took the Division II boys individual honor with a 16:39 over the three-mile course.
UT Arlington will compete at the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 22.
