NORMAN, Okla. - - UT Arlngton sprinters Jasmine Walls and Cordero Gray each ran NCAA regional qualifying times to lead the Mavericks track and field teams Saturday at the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla.
Walls, a sophomore from Pearland, finished first in the 100 meters with an 11.71, beating the 11.75 needed to post a regional qualifying time and shaving time off her previous best this outdoor season of 11.85. Walls was also impressive in the 200 meters, taking second place with a wind-aided time of 23.51.
On the men's side, UTA sophomore sprinter Cordero Gray posted a time of 21.31 in the 200 meters, beating the NCAA regional qualifying mark of 21.35. Gray also finished fourth in the 100 meters with a 10.54. Gray's Maverick teammate Jared Vaughan was just ahead of Gray in that event with a 10.50.
Takeshi Fujiwara finished fourth in the 400 meters with a 48.16, and Idilio Campos ran a 1:53.93 in a fast field in the 800 meters. That time was narrowly off his personal-best this outdoor season of 1:53.95. Andrew Duncan, already the holder of a regional-qualifying distance in the triple jump, didn't match his 50-foot performance last week, but a jump of 48-3.25 was good enough for fourth.
The Mavericks women placed three athletes in the Top 10 of the 1,500 meters, led by Caroline Erlingson's sixth-place time of 4:50.14.
