San Antonio, Texas - The UTA golf team headed into Monday's final round of the Lone Star Invitational in fifth place and after a one-over par 289 that is exactly where they finished in the 12-team field.
The Mavericks were basically in a race for third place as Texas A&M won the tournament with a score of 16-under while Texas finished second at six-under par. UTA, who finished with a team score of 10-over, were just six shots behind third place SMU and one shot behind fourth place Baylor.
"You can always go back and look at shots that you left out on the course," UTA head coach Jay Rees said. "We were close to finishing third in what was a good field. But we did hit some good shots and the result is a good one for us."
For the fourth consecutive tournament this spring, Zack Fischer was the top UTA golfer. The junior was not the low Maverick on the day but fired an even par 72 at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club to finish with a three-under score of 213 and an eighth place finish.
Bryce Easton and Wes Worster each finished in a tie for 21st with a seven-over score of 223. Easton had a one-over 73 in the final round while Worster shot 75.
Donald Dowie had the low round of the day for the Mavericks as he carded a one-under 71 to finish in a tie for 32nd at nine-over 225. Bobby Massa finished with a 10-over score of 226 and in a tie or 37th.
The Mavericks finish the fall portion of the schedule at the Southland Preview on Nov. 2 and 3 in Louisiana.
