FIRST ROUND RESULTS

KERRVILLE, Tx. - The UTA golf team used a strong back nine performance in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament at The Club at Comanche Trace in Kerrville, Texas to stand alone in first place after the first round.

The Mavs were 4-over par as a team after the first nine before a two hour weather delay halted play. But the team turned that slow start around with a stellar back nine to post a 4-under 284 and lead second place Lamar by six shots.

"We had a terrific back nine today," UTA head coach Jay Rees said. "It was a great afternoon. We did the little things and stayed away from the mistakes that can cost you in a tournament like this."

Zack Fischer had a career-low round of five-under 67 to lead the Mavs and is in first place among individuals after day one. Teammate Bobby Massa carded a two-under 70 and is in second place.

"Fischer had a career day," Rees said. "He played mistake free. Massa was solid as he has been all season."

All five of the Mavericks are in the top 19 after the first day as well. Kevin Carrigan is in a tie for eighth after a one-over 73 while Bryce Easton is in a tie for 15th at two-over 74 and Michael Van deVenter is in a tie for 19th at three-over 75.

"We are going to play with Lamar again tomorrow," Rees said. "We are taking this tournament one shot at a time. Our goal was to have the low round after day one and we have done that. Our goal tomorrow is to do the same thing."

Tuesday's second round begins at 8 a.m.
