DAY ONE GALLERY
Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington golf team finds itself in second place, but just three shots back after the first two rounds of the annual UTA/Waterchase Invitational.
The Mavericks led after the first round as they fired a five-under par score of 283 in the windy conditions at the Waterchase Golf Club. However, they fell back to second after shooting a four-over par 292 in the afternoon round. UTA stands at one-under 575, just three shots behind Rice who carded their own five-under 283 in the second round.
"It wasn't the easiest day to play out there today," UTA head coach Jay Rees said. "Our guys played pretty well today and I think we are in a good position to make a good run tomorrow. If we can play like we did in the first round we'll have a good shot at winning this tournament."
UTA's Zack Fischer is in a tie for third at two-under 142 after rounds of 73 and 69. Senior Bryce Easton and freshman Hunter Brown are in a tie for ninth at even par 144.
In all, 11 different players teed it up for the Mavericks as there was also an UTA-Orange team. That team is in 13th place with Donald Dowie leading the way for them with a one-over score of 145 after rounds of 73 and 71.
"We had a number of guys play well today," Rees added. "It's our home course and we know how to play well here and it was good to see Hunter play well in his first collegiate tournament. Donald did a good job of leading our other team."
Wichita State's Dustin Garza and Rice's Michael Buttacavoli are tied at the top of the individual tournament with a six-under score of 138.
The tournament concludes Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
