Arlington, Tex. - UT Arlington opened its season with an easy 88-45 victory over Texas Lutheran Friday.
Freshman Brandon Edwards led the Mavericks with team-highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds while LaMarcus Reed added 15 points and 11 rebounds. "That was a good start to the season," UTA head coach Scott Cross said. "We played well and it was nice to see all of our newcomers contributing to the outcome."
The Mavericks (1-0) took control of the game midway through the first half as they opened a 22-point halftime lead at 41-19.
The Mavericks defense controlled the game as they held TLU to just 28.1% from the field. Meanwhile UTA shot 47.1% as they made 24-of-51. UTA outrebounded the Bulldogs by a 47-29 margin and forced TLU into 27 turnovers.
UTA was also made 35-of-46 from the foul line as Texas Lutheran committed 34 fouls. The 35 foul shots made tied for the sixth-highest total in school history while the 46 attempts tied for the eighth-most.
The victory was a school record fifth consecutive season-opening win for the Mavericks.
Bryant Smith added 11 points for the Mavericks while Darius Richardson had 10. Isaac Williams led TLU (0-1) with 15.
The Mavericks next play at Oregon State on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. CT.
