Arlington, Tex. - Three UT Arlington golfers earned 2011 all-conference honors and head coach Jay Rees earned his third Coach of the Year award, the Southland Conference announced Monday.
Seniors Zack Fischer and Wes Worster were both named to first team all-conference after helping the Mavericks win the league title last week.
Fischer led the Mavericks with a stroke average of 72.58 and finished in a tie for fifth at last week's conference championship. This is the second consecutive year he has been named to the conference's first team.
Worster finished the year with a 73.12 stroke average, which was second on the team. He led the Mavericks at the conference tournament with a two-under score of 214, which put him in a tie for third. Last season he was an honorable mention all-conference selection and the Southland's Newcomer of the Year.
Sophomore Paul McConnell was named the conference's Newcomer of the Year and was also tabbed as a second team all-conference pick. McConnell averaged 73.15 strokes per round this season after transferring to UTA from Colorado.
He is the sixth UT Arlington golfer to earn Newcomer of the Year honors following Shad Muth (2001), Anthony Estorga (2003), Jeff Murray (2005), Ryan Zamarano (2006) and Worster (2010).
Rees earned his third conference Coach of the Year honor after leading the Mavericks to their fourth conference title and first since 2005. He was earned the award in 2005 and 2009.
The Mavericks are headed to one of six NCAA Regional sites from May 19-21. The NCAA Regional fields and sites will be announced May 9 at 5 p.m. (CDT).
