Arlington, Texas - Four student-athletes from the UT Arlington men's and women's tennis teams were named to the 2011 Southland Conference All-Academic Team, the league office announced Wednesday.
Daiana Negreanu, Maria Martinez-Romero, David Subirats and Yauheni Yakauleu represented UT Arlington on the SLC All-Academic team. Both Negreanu and Martinez-Romero were named to the first-team all-academic team.
Senior and SLC Player of the Year Negreanu had a 3.04 GPA in journalism and helped lead the Mavericks to a regular season and tournament title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals after going 16-6 in singles action at the No. 1 position. She was also selected first-team all-conference at both singles and doubles.
Teammate Martinez-Romero, from Nules, Spain, earned a 3.56 GPA in broadcast journalism and was also a first-team all-conference at singles and doubles. She was a perfect 11-0 in conference singles action, playing at No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 positions. For her career, she has posted a 58-6 record.
Subirats, a native of Barcelona, Spain, had a 3.18 GPA in interdisciplinary studies and was a first-team all-conference selection after going 5-0 at No. 5 singles in conference play. Overall, Subirats went 13-6 in singles play and recorded a 7-3 record in his last 10 matches.
Joining Subirats was sophomore teammate Yakauleu. The Minsk, Belarus native posted a 3.60 GPA in business and finished the year with an 11-11 singles record playing at the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
Student-athletes earn automatic qualification onto the Southland Conference All-Academic Team if they maintain a GPA of 3.0 and were also named first-team All-Southland Conference and/or the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine All-Academic District VI At-Large team.
