DALLAS - UT Arlington sophomore Zach Galliford fired an even-par final round Tuesday and tied for ninth at the 2014 Royal Oaks Intercollegiate. The Mavericks finished eighth in a loaded 12-team field that featured eight teams ranked in the top 50.
Galliford was in the top 10 at the end of each of the three rounds. His closing 71 at Royal Oaks Country Club completed a 2-over 215, which was eight shots back of individual winner Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen of Baylor.
Galliford had three birdies on Tuesday and finished the tournament tied for second overall in par-5 scoring at 4.44.
"I played well," he said. "The first two rounds were quite tough with the wind. I felt I got used to the conditions, and got a good start early and held on towards the end.
"Today was a bit less wind, so I felt I had more chances but I couldn't take my opportunities and make the putts. But all in all it was a good finish and I'm really happy that I finished in the top 10."
The Mavericks placed ahead of No. 19 SMU, Michigan, Minnesota and Duke in their final event of the fall.
"The field is one of the best in the nation," UT Arlington coach Jay Rees said. "I talked to the guys all week about every one of them playing for a personal best. Galliford did that today. As tough as the conditions were - the greens were firm and it was very windy yesterday - we're used to having to grind.
"We still didn't get from our seniors what's possible, so we still haven't played our best golf. The freshmen and sophomores are doing some great things. If we get everybody clicking, I believe we can beat top 20 teams and win the Sun Belt Championship."
UTA also had two finishers in the top 30 with senior Joss Gosling (21) and freshman Aaron Guanlao (T28). Rounding out the six-man team were senior Cash Wilkerson (59), senior Jake Argento (T66) and freshman Jake Greenspoon (69).
The Mavericks return in the spring at the Barona Collegiate Cup in San Diego starting Feb. 9.
