PARK CITY, Utah - Buoyed by Jake Argento and Cash Wilkerson tying for 11th, UT Arlington shot up the team standings and tied for fifth at the Utah Ogio Invitational.
The Mavericks started the third round in tied for eighth before firing a 4-over-par 359 as a team Tuesday. UTA's final round was tied with Boise State as the fourth-best round of the day. Utah and UALR were also tied for fifth.
"If we keep getting the kind of contribution that we got today, no scores higher than 75, we will keep getting better," UT Arlington coach Jay Rees said. "Our No. 1 goal is for us to be the best golf team we can be come the Sun Belt Championship in April."
Argento also made a serious move with a 5-under 66 at The Jeremy Golf and Country Club. The senior from Chandler, Arizona rocketed up 32 spots thanks to the lowest individual round of the day and tournament. Santa Clara's Tyler Kertson also had a 66 on Tuesday.
Wilkerson, a senior, began the final round tied for ninth, and finished the tournament with a 2-over 215 along with Argento. Freshman Jake Greenspoon made it three Mavericks in the top 20, tying for 18th with a 217. The other Mavericks competing were freshman Aaron Guanlao (T33), sophomore Zach Galliford (T61) and sophomore Jaret Brewer (T61).
"Cash and Jake did a great job leading the team this week," Rees said. "I was very pleased with the efforts from all of our freshmen. Galliford struggled this week with scoring the ball and putting especially, but we got better this week and we did eliminate the big numbers as a whole."
Santa Clara won the 13-team event. Next up for the Mavericks is the Miramont Invitational in Bryan, Texas from Oct. 13-14.
