KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - UT Arlington is 10th after Friday's first round of The Invitational at The Ocean Course. The Mavericks shot a 20-over-par 308 to trail leader South Florida by 26 strokes.
UTA senior Jake Argento fired a 3-over 75 to sit tied for 27th after 18 holes at the 7,115-yard course that's hosted the 1991 Ryder Cup and the 2012 PGA Championship, among other major events. Aaron Guanlao (76, T37), Zach Galliford (78, T52) and Joss Gosling (79, T59) rounded out the scoring for the Mavericks. Josh Radcliff (81, T65) also competed for UTA.
"We turned at 1-over and were in third place, and then we started missing fairways and you cannot do that at The Ocean Course," UT Arlington coach Jay Rees said. "We made too many double bogeys on the back 9. We have to keep the driver in play. We do that and eliminate the double bogeys, and then we are in the game competing.
"We are working hard to get better. It's a pretty young, inexperienced lineup. But this is who qualified and we will get better tomorrow. Aaron Guanlao played pretty good today - 76 with three double bogeys. Jake Argento shot 75 with one double bogey."
Tournament Notes: Kentucky's Cooper Musselman fires a first-round 67 which is two strokes shy of the tournament record (65 by Lee McCoy of Georgia in 2013)...South Florida shot a new tournament team-low round of 282, a record previously held by Georgia (283 in 2013)...Light and variable winds...Sunny and humid.
