LAKESIDE, California - UT Arlington men's golf moved up to eighth place after play completed Tuesday with the final two rounds of the Barona Collegiate Cup.
The Mavericks were 10th after Monday's first round and moved up two spots with the conclusion of the second round Tuesday. UTA (293-294-287-874) remained eighth after the third and final round.
Joss Gosling led the five-man UTA contingent by tying for 27th after a 4-under 68 in the third round. Cash Wilkerson jumped up 15 spots after the first round and tied for 40th. Aaron Guanlao and Zach Galliford each tied for 47th, and Josh Radcliff tied for 58th.
Though the 10-over-par team showing fell shy of expectations, interim UTA coach Stuart Powell was encouraged by the first tournament of the spring.
"The tournament went like I expected," Powell said. "I thought we would play a little bit better. The greens were very fast and very undulating, and we had a little trouble with them, but in the final round the guys got their games back together and we were really playing well.
"Gosling played exceptionally well in the final round. He had trouble with his swing early on, but we finished really strong. The rest of the guys followed suit, so we finished 1 under in the final round which was admirable."
Barona Collegiate Cup host San Diego State finished on top of the 13-team field. San Diego also had the top two individual finishers in Xander Schauffele and Nahum Mendoza.
The Mavericks return to action in the Desert Intercollegiate Invitational on Feb. 20.
