PALM DESERT, California - Jake Argento sits tied for second and UT Arlington is tied for fifth after Friday's first round of the 2015 Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The second round gets underway Saturday morning, with the final round Sunday.
Argento fired a 3-under-par 69 at the Classic Club, two shots back of leader Zach Smith of UC Santa Barbara. The Mavericks shot a 1-over 289 as a team, tying for fifth along with TCU and Oregon. Texas Tech has the team lead at 7 under.
"The team played very well today," UTA interim coach Stuart Powell said. "We are tied for fifth with Oregon State and TCU going into tomorrow's round. We did start out a little rough on the front side, but the team settled down and played much better on the back side.
"Jake Argento led the team with a 3-under- par 69 carding nothing but pars and birdies on his scorecard. Freshman Aaron Guanlao shot a very nice 1-under-par 71. I look for another very good round tomorrow, which should keep us in the top five."
Guanlao is tied for 14th. Cash Wilkerson (73, T37), Zach Galliford (76, T73) and Jake Greenspoon (78, T98) round out the team contingent for UTA. Marley Sweeney (77, T85) is playing as an individual.
