LAREDO, Texas - Buoyed by a fantastic final round from Jake Argento, UT Arlington climbed to a fourth-place finish Saturday at the 2015 Border Olympics.
Argento fired a 4-under-par 68 at Laredo Country Club, moving up 25 spots after the second round to finish tied for sixth in the 102-man field. His 4-under 212 was a personal-best tournament showing at UTA. Argento's previous highest UTA finish was tying for 11th at the OGIO Utah Invitational in October.
"Jake is started to feel it and starting to believe in the things that [assistant coach Stuart Deane] is working with him on," UTA interim coach Stuart Powell said. "He's a talented golfer to begin with, but over the last year-and-a-half he hasn't been playing up to his potential. Now he's started to see it and believe it. Great things are starting to happen for him."
The Mavericks shot a 2-under 286 on Saturday, the second-best round of the day to move up from seventh. UT Arlington finished three shots behind third-place Sam Houston State in a deep 18-team field.
"We beat a lot of really good teams," Powell said. "We fought tough and nail. We just got beat out for a trophy. I can't say how proud I am of the guys. My hats off to them for the way they played."
Zach Galliford had a 1-under 71 in the third round to rise to a tie for 20th at even-par 216 for the tournament. Cash Wilkerson (T30, 218), Aaron Guanlao (T40, 220) and Jake Greenspoon (T50, 222) round out the scoring team for UTA. Marley Sweeney (T70, 226) competed as an individual.
Powell was impressed with the balance displayed by the squad throughout the weekend. All five members were between even and 3-over par through the first two rounds.
"That's what we've been looking for from everyone going forward," Powell said. "It's got to be a balanced team. If everyone shoots around par, we can be around the top five consistently."
Baylor won the team championship at 15-under-par 849, while Houston's Blair Hamilton claimed the medalist honors at 9-under-par 207.
The Mavericks return to tournament competition at the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio starting March 23.
