SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Amidst a deep field at the Lone Star Invitational, UT Arlington finished a two-round opening day in a tie for fifth at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Jake Argento helped lead the Mavericks with a 4-under-par 68 in the opening round and finished 12th heading into the final day. Aaron Guanlao matched Argento's 68 in his second round to finish 1-under. Overall, the Mavericks were 7-under as a team and are tied with Louisiana for fifth.
"I'm excited with the way the guys played today," UT Arlington interim coach Stuart Powell said. "Argento had a super first round. This was the first 36-hole day that the guys have had to walk and carry their bags. You could tell they were tired coming down the stretch, but none of them gave up. They continued to play hard."
Argento, coming off a sixth place finish in his last appearance, fired four birdies in the opening nine holes and knocked in another on the par-4 12th. After a shaky start to his second round, Argento rallied by dropping four birdies on the back nine to finish at even for the round.
Jake Greenspoon shot a 1-under-par 71 in each of his two rounds, while Guanlao was bogey free in his second round to go with four birdies.
"After the success we had in the last tournament and the success were having in this tournament, the guys are beginning to buy into the fact that this is just normal play for them," Powell said. "This is the way we intend to play every tournament. We're going to go out tomorrow and play our own game and we expect to have the same type of success we had today."
No. 6 Texas Tech (-27) took the tournament lead after the opening day to lead second-place No. 36 Southeastern Louisiana (-18). The Red Raiders had a pair at the top as Hannes Ronneblad led teammate Clement Sordet by a stroke at 9-under.
The third and final round of play is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
