SAN ANTONIO, Texas - UT Arlington golf finished out play at the Lone Star Invitational in sixth on Tuesday at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Conditions proved tough as wind picked up throughout the third and final round. The Mavericks finished at 3-under as team on Tuesday and were 10 shots under par overall. Jake Argento and Aaron Guanlao led the Mavs in the individual standings, as each was tied for 13th at 4-under-par.
"Today's round played a little tougher because of the pin placements and a little bit of wind coming up, but the guys fought through that," UT Arlington interim coach Stuart Powell said. "I am excited for the way Argento and Guanlao finished the tournament. Cash Wilkerson came back today from his first round yesterday and show 1-under, which was very nice. Our sixth place finish keeps us on track to continue moving up in the national rankings."
The Mavericks finished eight shots ahead of No. 34-ranked Ohio State in the 16-team field.
Guanlao was able to bounce back from a bogey on the second to rally to shoot a 3-under-par 69, while Argento was even after four birdies and four bogies. Wilkerson strung together four birdies over 10 holes to recover from early mishaps.
No. 6 Texas Tech claimed the overall team title with a tournament-record 29-under 835. The Red Raiders also picked up the individual title as Hannes Ronneblad edged UTSA's Zander Lozano after two holes in a sudden-death playoff.
UTA golf is back in action on April 6 to begin the Jim West Intercollegiate in Bastrop, Texas.
