MIRAMAR BEACH, Florida -- UT Arlington freshman Aaron Guanlao is tied for sixth and the Mavericks are tied for fourth after Monday's first two rounds of the Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship.
Guanlao fired a 2-under-par 69 in the second round at Raven Golf Club to shoot up the leaderboard. The Haslet native owns a 1-over 143 through the two rounds, sitting seven shots off the lead held by Georgia Southern's Kim Koivu.
"I fought hard through some adversity and was able to stick to my game plan," Guanlao said. "I was definately happy with my results."
UTA (+12, 580) is 26 shots back of leader Georgia Southern going into Tuesday's third and final round, but only six shots behind second-place Troy.
"After a few days of rain delays, the boys it off to a slower start than we would've liked," assistant coach Stuart Deane said. "As the course got harder, the boys played better. Being tied for fourth, we are looking to be aggressive tomorrow and get some low numbers. Hopefully we can force a playoff."
Cash Wilkerson and Jake Greenspoon also turned in solid performances, tying for 15th after each carding a plus-3 145. Joss Gosling (T35, 149) and Jake Argento (T41, 150) round out the UTA team showing.
The Georgia Southern Eagles soared to a 20-stroke lead, aided by a second round team score of nine-under par 275.
The Eagles were led by Koivu, Scott Wolfes and Andrew Klasing as the trio combined to post a 14-under score for the clubhouse leader. Those three are the top three in the individual scoreboard led by Koivu who sits at 6-under following the two rounds.
Koivu led all golfers with a 4-under par 67 in round two after carding a 2-under 69 in round one. The Eagles logged 42 birdies as a team in the first two rounds and were a combined 11-under-par on the par-5 holes. Wolfes led the team with 10 birdies, and Klasing, who is in the five-man lineup for the first time this season, had nine.
An even-par score for the Eagles in Tuesday's final round would shatter the 54-hole total record at a Sun Belt championship.
The 11 teams played 36-holes on Monday due to Sunday's first round getting postponed due to torrential rains that poured through the Emerald Coast on Sunday morning and afternoon. Lightning delayed the start of Monday's rounds as teams took to the tee at 8:30 a.m. CT instead of the scheduled 7:30 a.m. start.
The Troy Trojans are second behind the Eagles with a two-round total of 574 (+6) with Georgia State one stroke behind the Trojans at +7. Both the Trojans and Panthers shot even-par in the second round.
The 54-hole championship concludes on Tuesday with the winner earning the Sun Belt Conference's automatic bid to an NCAA Regional.
Tee times for Tuesday's final round begin at 7:30 a.m. CT. The teams will utilize the same format for round three as they did for rounds one and two with 10 groups starting on hole No. 10 and the lead groups on No. 1.
