BASTROP, Texas -- A strong final round Tuesday lifted UT Arlington to a fourth-place finish at the Jim West Intercollegiate at Wolfdancer Golf Club.
The Mavericks (301-286-289=876) improved four spots with a third-round 1-over-par 289, tying for fourth along with Sun Belt foe UALR. UTA's final round was tied for the third best of the day along with tournament winner St. Mary's and third-place finisher Stephen F. Austin.
"In today's round we did not get off to a good start," UTA interim coach Stuart Powell said. "Though we started the day in eighth place and we soon dropped to a tie for 11th. The team did not let that bother them because they understood, as a result of the shotgun start, they started on the hardest holes on the course.
"As the round continued they began to relax and play their game, and began to get strokes back with birdies."
Aaron Guanlao led the UT Arlington contingent with his first ever top-10 showing. The freshman from Haslet, Texas finished the three-round tournament with an even-par 216 after a final round 73. He carded four birdies and five bogeys on a warm Tuesday.
Guanlao's previous career best was tying for 13th in UTA's previous outing, the Lone Star Invitational last month in San Antonio. He came into Tuesday in 10th after the first two rounds.
The rest of the scoring Mavericks were Jake Greenspoon (T22, 220), Zach Galliford (T22, 220), Cash Wilkerson (T29, 221) and Jake Argento (T57, 230). Joss Gosling, playing as an individual, tied for 22nd after finishing at 6-over 220.
Saint Mary's won the tournament with a team total of 858 (288-281-289), followed by Sam Houston State in second-place with a 859, (282-289-288) and Stephen F. Austin with a total of 867, (289-289-289).
The Mavericks are playing their best golf going into Sun Belt Championship, which opens April 19. UTA's best outings of the season are in the last three tourneys -- The Border Olympics (fourth), Lone Star (sixth) and Jim West.
"Finishing off the round and the tournament the way they did speak volumes for their will to win," Powell said. "And tying for fourth in field with this many great teams showcases how much talent the guys have. I think this also solidifies their belief that they can win the Sun Belt Conference."
